Megara

Megara is not drawn like someone would anticipate the romantic interest of the hero to be. Instead of bright hues and values, she is made up of somewhat muted colors, telling us that she is generally a calm person. Looking at her dark hair, we guess that she has a darker personality, as Hercules and most of the gods have light hair. And while she is not as sharp around the edges as Hades, she certainly has some jagged edges of her own, indicating her past and current suffering under Hades.

Unlike most women in Disney movies who are ramrod straight, she is drawn in an almost slinking way, showing the audience that she is a sarcastic, laid back woman who is in no way proper.

Even the make-up she is drawn with tells us about her. She is shown to have full shiny lips and heavy eye make-up, unlike the few other women we see in the movie. With this we can see that she is likely to play the role of a seductress in the film, especially with her lips painted red, the color associated with lust.

But even with all of the bad, it is easy to see the good person that she truly is on the inside shining through. Her face is drawn in the shape of a heart, making her seem almost darling when you notice it. Then there is her smile, while both Hades and Meg wear near-constant smiles, her’s is sweet and sincere most of the time while Hades’ is a mean smirk.

The one aspect of how she is drawn that is the most telling though is the way she looks at Hercules. It is so easy to see that she loves him, even if she herself does not accept it. Whenever he’s near her she gets that fond look on her face, shown in the tilt of her eyebrows and the slight upturn of her lips. Anyone who sees how she looks at Hercules can tell that she is not as cold-hearted as she may first appear to be.
