Hercules

ReCo.gif

Throughout the movie, the style of Hercules’ art goes through many changes. These changes show how Hercules himself evolves as a person and tells what he is like at each stage in his life.  At the start of the movie when Hercules is only a baby, he looks vastly different from the image that comes to mind of him as a young adult.

It is easy to tell when you first see Hercules as a baby that he is a god, and that he is to be the hero of this story. Through giving him an outline of soft golden light, and making both his skin and hair varying shades of gold, he resembles a christ figure, making him both holy and the savior of the movie. In using this color, it also indicates that Hercules will be victorious because gold is the color of success. In addition to this, they draw him with thin, delicate lines and soft curves. This shows that at this moment, he is pure and vulnerable.

When we see him as a teenager, he no longer has that golden light, but he does still have a color palette of shades similar to gold. We can infer from this that he is no longer a god, but that there is still something special about him. The smooth, thin curves he had when he was a baby are now replaced with rounded corners, showing he is closer to the sharp angles associated with masculinity. We can see that while he is still young and innocent, he is starting to lose those things.

Seeing him as a young adult, he looks like a completely different person. He is now drawn with sharper angles, indicating that he has grown up and become a man. He has a sharply curved jaw and his muscles and hands are drawn with almost straight lines, but he still retains some curves and the same coloration. With those few curves present we can see that while he has changed and grown into a man, he is still the same sweet and kind boy we knew.
